How AI assistants decide which sources to name, and what has to be true of a page before one will quote it.
Answer engine optimization is the practice of structuring content so AI assistants select it as a cited source when generating an answer. Where traditional search optimization targets ranking position, AEO targets the citation layer. It depends on four things: crawler access, so the assistant can read the page at all; a self-contained answer near the top of the page; structured data declaring what the page and the business are; and recency, since assistants weight recently updated content heavily.

The two overlap but optimize for different outcomes. Search optimization competes for a position on a results page a person will scan. Answer engine optimization competes to be the source a machine quotes when composing a reply that person may never trace back.
The practical difference is format. A page can rank well while being written in a way no assistant can extract cleanly — long narrative paragraphs, answers buried halfway down, claims that depend on earlier context to make sense.

Selection depends on several signals working together. The page has to be reachable, meaning the assistant's crawler is not blocked. It has to contain a passage that answers the question without requiring surrounding context. It should carry structured data identifying the page type and the organization behind it. And it should be recent — assistants disproportionately cite content updated within the last year.
Content format matters more than most people expect. Lists, comparison tables, and question-and-answer sections are cited at substantially higher rates than narrative prose, because they can be lifted whole without losing meaning.
The most common cause is the simplest: the crawler is blocked. Platform-level bot protection frequently blocks GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot alongside genuinely malicious traffic, and the setting is often enabled by default. A blocked assistant cannot cite you regardless of how good the content is.
The second cause is structural. A page with no direct answer, no headings phrased as questions, and no structured data gives an assistant nothing clean to quote, so it quotes whoever did make themselves readable.

The answer to the page's core question appears within the first 150 words, written as plain fact rather than as a claim about the business. Headings are phrased the way people ask questions. Paragraphs stand alone, without back-references like 'as mentioned above.' Comparative information sits in a table. A frequently-asked section at the end carries FAQPage structured data, and the page shows a visible last-updated date.
None of this is stylistic preference. Each item corresponds to something an assistant checks when deciding whether a passage can be quoted safely.
AI citations do not appear in Search Console, so measurement is manual. The working method is to keep a list of the questions a prospect would actually ask, run them across each major assistant on a fixed schedule, and record whether the business is named, what page was cited, and which competitors appeared instead.
Referral traffic from assistant domains can also be segmented in analytics, though it understates the effect — a great many people read the answer and act without clicking.
What search engine optimization work actually consists of, how long each part takes to show results, and which numbers tell you whether it is working.
Which platforms are worth the time for a trade or industrial business, what to post, and how social activity feeds search and AI visibility.

Answer engine optimization is structuring content so AI assistants select it as a cited source when generating an answer. It relies on crawler access, a self-contained answer near the top of the page, structured data, extractable formats such as tables and lists, and recent updates.
Usually one of three reasons. The assistant's crawler is blocked from your site, often by platform bot protection enabled by default. Your pages contain no self-contained passage worth quoting. Or your business has no structured data establishing what it does and where it operates. All three are correctable.
No. Google AI Overviews draw largely from pages already ranking organically, so search performance remains a prerequisite. The two are best treated as one body of work with two outputs: a ranking position, and a citation.
Assistants weight recency heavily, and citation rates fall sharply for content more than roughly a year old. A quarterly review of priority pages, with the last-updated date and the schema dateModified field kept in sync, is a reasonable cadence.
